Our History

                                      HISTORY OF
THE BIRMINGHAM METROPOLITAN WOMEN’S CLUB
                                         (TBMWC)

It all began on December 31, 1992 when an article appeared in the Observer-Eccentric informing the public that The Community House in Birmingham, Michigan had plans to form a Senior Women’s Club.  As it turned out the reaction was overwhelming.

Penny Kleene who was a member of the Volunteer Advisory Committee for The Community House was asked to assume responsibility to form a Senior Women’s Club. A committee was formed to select Bylaws for the Club, using the Bylaws of the Senior Men’s Club (which was very popular at The Birmingham Community House) as a guide. The committee chaired by Penny Kleene consisted of nine members, Rickey Butzel, Teresa Byrne, Fran Carson, Phyllis Cartwright, Kay Erwin, Ann Phelan, Grace Smith and Shirley Watson.

  • April 20, 1993 – the first membership meeting of The Community House Senior Women’s Club was held.  A Board of Directors was voted into office.  And, the wheels were in motion to form the Club.
  • 2004 A Bylaw was changed to lower the age of membership from 55 to 50 – the new age for “senior.”  The Women’s Club continues to be an integral part of the community.  Our focus remains on providing fellowship, programs and activities.  The Founders’ Tea is held on the second Tuesday during May and is a highlight of our yearly meetings.
  • October 27, 2014, after many years as the Senior Women’s Club, the word Senior was dropped in order to attract more members.
  • March, 2020 – The COVID 19 Pandemic.  Everything was shut down.  The community House was closed.  As COVID continued to be a part of our lives, we were not able to gather together for our bi-monthly luncheons. Gradually as life went back to normal we were able to meet outside.  At this point, we were no longer affiliated with The Community House, thus the search for a new venue was considered by the Officers and the Board of Directors for our monthly luncheons.
  • September 14, 2021 we came together to celebrate the beginning of a new era.  We met at Plum Hollow Country Club for a Welcome Back luncheon.
  • October 12, 2021 was the Annual Business meeting, and we were back!  We were required to establish new Bylaws and we required a new name.
  • In October, November, and December the luncheons were at Plum Hollow Country Club.
  • 2022, A New Year and a new venue: The Iroquois Club..
  • Moving Forward, we established new Bylaws and  we have a new name:  THE BIRMINGHAM METROPOLITAN WOMEN’S CLUB
  • New Year of 2023, we celebrated 30 Years of Joyous Friendship.
  • The Founder’s Day Tea was renamed The Annual Spring Tea and continues to be held on the second Tuesday of May.
  • 2023-2024, we established our Website: https://tbmwc.com.
  • We developed new letterhead, as well as notecards which incorporate our new Logo.
